I treat my yard like an apartment with no walls. Dining zone. Lounging zone.

How will I use this space? What’s the overall mood I want (relaxing,) energetic, modern? Where does the sun hit throughout the day?

I wrote those down on a napkin once. Still have it. (It’s stained with coffee.)

Don’t overthink the sketch. Pencil on printer paper is fine. Draw your house.

Draw where the patio goes. Mark where people walk. Block out zones with rectangles.

Label them.

That sketch saved me $473 last year.

It also helped me spot that my “lounging zone” was directly under a leaky gutter. (Spoiler: it wasn’t lounging for long.)

Large planters? Use them like furniture. Put one on each side of your patio door.
